Nursing school consists of studying, studying, and did I mention studying? No matter how smart you think you are, I can guarantee that there are going to be classes and topics that you won’t understand after it’s taught. Trust me.
Even though nursing school at times can be difficult and questionable, it is certainly doable… even if it requires the need of several study aids and self-help books.
Best Nursing Books for Beginners
In this article, I will be taking you through some of the best nursing books for beginners.
So here are some of my favorite self-help nursing books that have benefited so many nurses in training, and might benefit you as well.
Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination
This book will save your life at any point in nursing school. This comprehensive review sums up main points and ideas about almost every subject in nursing and every disease out there. Each section also has practice questions, and when you purchase a brand new book, it also comes with an access code to practice thousands of more questions!

Pearson Reviews and Rationales: Pathophysiology with “Nursing Reviews & Rationales”
Your pathophysiology class can get pretty overwhelming and memorizing/recognizing signs and symptoms of a disease can make it even more challenging.
This book should be a huge help since it breaks everything down in lecture into easy to remember and easy to read bullet points. The book also includes a pre-test before each chapter and post-test after each chapter.

- It is easy to read
- It is self explanatory
- It has pre tests and pro tests at the end and beginning of a new chapter
- It is perfect for self assessment
Fundamentals Success
Fundamentals is the one class where memorization won’t get you very far. With a class like this, tests are all application based and the only way anyone can get better with application type tests is to practice questions related to the topic.
This book strictly has endless practice questions related to fundamentals and also comes with an access code to practice even more questions until you feel confident in your nursing skills.
Why This Book Is Good For You
- It is a good self assemble book
- All the tests are application based
- It is the ideal book to prepare you for the real life world of nursing
Pharm Phlash!
Pharmacology is a drag and memorizing drugs, their adverse effects, drug-drug interactions, and contraindications is a chore. However with these pre-made flash cards, memorizing all the details gets a little bit easier and luckily the most important information on the card is either bolded or in red.
If you don’t have the time to make flash cards for each prototype drug or if your flash cards seem to lack some substance, I’d invest in these.
Why This Book Is Good For You
- It makes memorization of drugs, their applications, and their effects very easy
- All the vital information in this book are bolded or colored red so it’s easy to spot and remember
Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy!
I recently purchased this book in supplement of the materials I already had, and the title does not lie, with this book, pharmacology is indeed made incredibly easy.
The book summarizes pharmacology concepts and also looks at the big picture with different drug classes and also includes the nursing process with each drug and drug class. I strongly recommend.
Why This Book Is Good For You
- It perfectly summarizes pharmacology concepts and helps you remember them easily
- It prepares you for real life pharmacological situations
